Knob of butter for greasing. 1kg waxy potatoes such as Desiree 300ml milk. 300ml double cream. 1 garlic clove peeled and halved. Pinch freshly grated nutmeg 100g Gruyère cheese
Pre heat your oven to 160C/gas mark 3.
Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.
Halve a juicy clove of garlic and rub it round the inside of a shallow baking dish, rub the dish with a little butter.
In a bowl mix the milk, cream and grated nutmeg. Season with a good pinch of salt and pepper and pour over the potatoes.
Now layer the potatoes in your dish and add some of the milk/cream mixture as you go.
Sprinkle with the Gruyere cheese and cover with foil.
Bake for about an hour and a half, removing the foil for the last 30 minutes.
